Making a hat that will touch the sky.

We are making a performance art piece for a cool cat in Seattle. This type of hat is called a sugar loaf hat. It will stand 9” tall when it’s done.
Stay tuned. It’s a head turner.

Kevin called 3 milliners in the fall of 2021 and asked if it was possible to make him a really tall hat? All 3 said no, not possible!

He emailed us with the same question and photos for reference. I said yes, possible.

Truth be told, I was not exactly sure how to make this hat but I had the confidence to say, “YES I CAN” because of my mentor @waynewichern

At some point in my career I learned you don’t have to have all the answers you just have to be honest about your skill set and know where to find the answers when you need them.

Together Wayne and I crafted Kevin’s hat. We mail ordered a special hat block from Europe to get just the right shape and height in the crown.

We had to use two fur felts. One for the brim and one for the crown. We used a very stiff western weight to make the flat brim and a lighter weight western felt to make the crown.

Kevin waited months and months to get what he wanted. But in the end he got just what he wanted because he waited.

Happy client, happy maker.
